Tell me three things and I can answer in one reply:
- Who the audience is, and roughly how many
- The room, and how long the slot is
- The date, or the range you are working within
I will tell you which of the seven fits — or write you a new one, which is usually the more interesting outcome.
On the day
What happens either side of the talk.
Most of the value of a visiting speaker is in the twenty minutes afterwards, so it is worth planning for.
Before
I would rather arrive thirty minutes early and test the projector than discover the adapter problem in front of the audience. If there is a class I could sit in on, I usually will.
Questions
Ten minutes minimum, fifteen if the audience is students. I will take questions I cannot answer and say so, which is the more useful lesson anyway.
Afterwards
Every talk has a short web address on its last slide. It leads to the slides, the further reading, and a way of contacting me — so nobody has to write anything down.
