To make a star you have to get rid of heat. Today the universe is full of carbon and oxygen and dust, all of which are extremely good at radiating heat away, so gas clouds cool efficiently and fragment into small stars like the Sun.
The first stars had none of that. Hydrogen and helium are poor coolants, so the clouds could not fragment, and what collapsed instead was enormous.
A short argument that runs from chemistry to hundred-solar-mass stars, with one equation and no apology for it. This is the talk I would give to a room that has never chosen to attend a science event.
